The March 17 email from campaign chairman John Podesta was posted to WikiLeaks Tuesday and shows that Murphy's name was among 39 candidates considered as potential running mates.

In his email, Podesta organized the choices into seven "food groups." Murphy was listed in the same group of Caucasian male politicians as eventual vice presidential pick Tim Kaine. Though the "food groups" were not labeled, they appeared to have broken down into categories such as Hispanic and Latino politicians, female politicians, African American politicians, military leaders, businesspeople and philanthropists. U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders was in a category of his own.

Other prominent people listed as potential running mates included U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, Michael Bloomberg, and both Bill and Melinda Gates.

Murphy was elected to the Senate in 2012 after serving three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. His name first came up as a potential VP pick in May when USA Today reported that he was being considered as a possible running mate for Clinton. He told Daily Voice at the time that he had not had any conversations with Clinton's campaign about the position.

A spokesperson for Murphy had no comment when reached by Daily Voice Tuesday.

Murphy made national headlines this summer when he led a 15-hour filibuster on the Senate floor in an effort to get lawmakers to vote on gun control measures. Murphy has been a staunch advocate for stronger gun control laws since taking office.
