Carter is a former Air Force pilot who has lived in Connecticut for 10 years. He supports reducing state spending and lowering taxes.
DeMoura, a Bethel lawyer, said he wasn’t prepared to make the cuts Carter proposed. He said he hoped to avoid tax increases but said might support them if they preserved important programs.
FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Republican state Rep. John Shaban won re-election Tuesday, defeating Democratic challenger Leon Karvelis to represent the 135th House District.
The 135th District represents Easton, Redding and Weston.
Shaban, 48, is a Redding resident and attorney who is a former vice chairman of the Redding Zoning Board.
Karvelis, 69, also from Redding, sought to make environmental issues the key to the campaign, criticizing Shaban’s low ranking by the League of Conservation Voters, which gave him a score of 53. But Shaban struck back, claiming he’s an environmental lawyer who doesn’t pay attention to rankings by special interest groups.
Shaban seeks to bring the state’s economic problems under control, but Karvelis criticized Shaban’s positions on taxes and regulations.
Karvelis serves on the Region 9 Board of Education.
