WESTON, Conn. - The Weston Library will be hosting a screening of the controversial documentary "The United States of ALEC" with a question-and-answer session afterward on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Most people don't know what the American Legislative Exchange Council is or does, said Weston resident, Bob Gardner. With the screening and talk in Weston, he said he hopes to correct that.

The screening and discussion will be hosted by Cheri Quickmire, executive director of Common Cause in Connecticut, and Weston resident Fran Goldstein.

The discussion will focus on why many people don't know about ALEC, or the American Legislative Exchange Council. The documentary was made by Bill Moyers.

"The 'United States of ALEC' reports on the most influential corporate-funded political force most of us have never heard of – ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council. A national consortium of state politicians and powerful corporations, ALEC presents itself as a 'nonpartisan public-private partnership.' But behind that mantra lies a vast network of corporate lobbying and political action aimed to increase corporate profits at public expense without public knowledge," the documentary website says.

Local members of ALEC include state Reps. Larry Cafero, John Piscopo and John Shaban.

The screening will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17. Due to limited seating in the library auditorium, reservations are requested by contacting Fran Goldstein at 203-454-5429 or by email .

The Weston Library is located at 56 Norfield Road.
