Clinton Posts Narrow Primary Victory In Connecticut, Wins 3 Other States

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — It was a late night for front-runner Hillary Clinton and her supporters as they waited for the primary result in Connecticut. But at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, NBC News called the Nutmeg State for the former secretary of the state who is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination.

Donald Trump was the winner on the Republican side, with nearly 60 percent of the vote, and Ohio Gov. John Kasich in second.

The network projected that Clinton would capture 50 percent of the vote, with U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont coming in with 48 percent of the vote.

The Quinnipiac Poll last week had put Clinton at 51 percent and Sanders trailing at 42 percent. Results showed that Clinton was picking up more support in cities, with Sanders ahead in smaller towns, NBC said.

Clinton also posted primary wins Tuesday in Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland, with Sanders scoring a victory in Rhode Island.

The Associated Press said Clinton could lose every remaining primary and still secure the nomination.

For the Republicans, Trump swept to victory in all five of the states with primaries.

In the days leading up to the primary, Clinton made appearances in Connecticut. She gave a rallying speech at a get-out-the-vote event at the University of Bridgeport on Sunday.

Clinton pledged to tackle gun violence, drug addiction and the minimum wage during the rally.

“We cannot go on like this,” Clinton said of gun violence in the nation. “And there is absolutely no conflict between protecting the Second Amendment rights of gun owners and protecting our children, our teenagers and other of our neighbors, family and friends.”

Clinton also advocated for quicker access to mental health and drug addiction treatment. She said it was “heartbreaking” to meet family members who have sought treatment for their loved ones with addictions only to find it’s too expensive or not available."

She had the support of most major Democrats across the state, including the governor, lieutenant governor, both U.S. senators and all five congressmen.

Clinton also was endorsed by a number of mayors and first selectmen in the Nutmeg State, including Bridgeport Mayor Joseph Ganim, Bethel First Selectman Matthew Knickerbocker, Ridgefield First Selectman Rudy Marconi, Stamford Mayor David Martin, Redding First Selectman Julia Pemberton, Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling and Fairfield First Selectman Michael Tetreau.
