Westport Police: Trio Tried To Buy Gas, Cigarettes With Fake Gift Cards

WESTPORT, Conn. -- Three people who fled a gas station in Westport after they attempted to buy gas and cigarettes with a fraudulent gift card were arrested Saturday on multiple charges, police said. 

Officers were called to a convenience store at 690 Post Road E. at 4:36 p.m., Saturday, on a report of two men attempting to purchase gas and cartons of cigarettes with a fraudulent gift card, police said.

The men were unable to complete their purchase and left the scene before officers arrived, police said.

The store clerk provided police with the license plate number and a description of the vehicle.

Officer David Scinto spotted and stopped the suspects' vehicle a short distance away, police said.

Officers found 11 fraudulent gift cards and 24 cartons of cigarettes in the vehicle, police said. 

Jonathan Donaldson, 32, of the Bronx, N.Y., was arrested and charged with 11 counts of third-degree conspiracy to commit forgery, 11 counts of conspiracy to commit credit card theft, conspiracy to commit illegal use of credit card, sixth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny and third-degree larceny by possession. 

Oshane Thompson, 23, of Williamsport, Pa., was arrested and charged with 11 counts of third-degree forgery, 11 counts of credit card theft, criminal attempt at illegal use of a credit card, sixth-degree criminal attempt at larceny, third-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit credit card theft, conspiracy to commit illegal use of credit card and third-degree conspiracy to commit forgery.

Anaiah Spears, 22, of East Elmhurst, N.Y., was arrested and charged with third-degree conspiracy to commit forgery, conspiracy to commit illegal use of credit card, sixth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny, conspiracy to commit credit card theft, third-degree larceny, 11 counts of credit card theft and 11 counts of third-degree forgery.

Each was held on $25,000 bond each and assigned a court date of Aug. 12 in Norwalk Superior Court.
