WESTPORT, Conn. — Hoping to brighten up the holiday season for hundreds of underprivileged children, the Westport Police Department is determined to carry on with this weekend’s toy drive as planned, regardless of the snow.
The toy drive is scheduled from 9 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday outside the Athletic Show Factory, 1560 Post Road E. However, due to the impending storm and hazardous driving conditions, residents are encouraged to drop their donations off at the police department, 50 Jesup Road, if it's more convenient.
“We are still counting on the donations to make this drive successful,” Sgt. Jill Ruggiero said in a statement. “We will gladly accept checks and do the shopping ourselves.”
If road conditions become too hazardous, Ruggiero said residents should not risk driving. Also, conditions may eventually make it difficult for officers to keep the Athletic Shoe Factory drop-off site staffed throughout the day, she said.
Officers plan to be at the drop-off site Sunday, weather permitting, Ruggiero said.
New, unwrapped and unopened toys are being collected for the drive. Cash or check donations will also be accepted at the Athletic Shoe Factory and the police department. Checks should be made payable to “Westport PBA.”
The toy drive, which kicked off last weekend, benefits a number of local organizations and nonprofits that serve families in need.
“A heartfelt thank you to all of those who have already donated and those who are going to do whatever they can to get us their donations this weekend,” Ruggiero said.
Anyone with questions about the toy drive can call the police department at 203-341-6000.
