Westport Police: Man Faces DUI After Driving Into Swamp

WESTPORT, Conn. – A 23-year-old Redding man was charged with drunken driving in Westport on Sunday morning after police said he drove off the roadway, down an embankment and into a swampy area.

William Higgins was spotted by police after he made a left turn onto Treadwell Avenue from the right lane of Riverside Avenue. On Treadwell Avenue, Higgins’ car drifted and almost hit a parked car, according to the police report.

Higgins then accelerated and drove through a stop sign at the intersection of Treadwell Avenue and Kings Highway South before turning onto Strathmore Lane, police said. There, his car drove off the side of the road and down an embankment into the swamp-like area, police said.

Higgins breath smelled of alcohol and he was reportedly unsteady on his feet, the police report said. He failed field sobriety tests and the results of his breath test were a blood alcohol content of .185 and .148, police said.

In addition to driving under the influence of alcohol, Higgins was charged with several motor vehicle violations. He was released after posting a $500 bond and is due in Norwalk Superior Court on Aug. 20.
