Westport Cops: Man Drove Recklessly With Son In Car

WESTPORT, Conn. – A 39-year-old New Jersey man accused of trying to evade Westport police with his 13-year-old son in the car was charged with reckless driving Friday, police said.

Police were called to the Stop & Shop parking lot on a report of a suspicious vehicle. The vehicle, a Dodge SUV with Florida plates, reportedly drove up to several elderly people in the parking lot, police said.

When officers arrived, the SUV exited the parking lot at a high rate of speed and cut across two lanes of traffic on Post Road E., police said. The SUV then took a hard right onto Bulkley Avenue S., where the driver was later stopped, according to the police report.

The driver, identified as James Thompson of Lynhurst, N.J., was charged with reckless driving, a misdemeanor. He was released after posting a $2,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 12.
