WESTPORT, Conn. -- A suspect in a rash of catalytic converter thefts who was spotted while cruising through the parking lots near the Saugatuck Train Station had a number of possibly stolen car parts in his truck, Westport police said.

The truck, spotted at about 11:35 a.m. Thursday, matched the description of one operated by a white man suspected in the theft of several catalytic converters, a part of a car's exhaust system, in Westport and surrounding towns, police said.

Officers stopped the truck on Saugatuck Avenue, police said. The driver, Clifford St. Arnault, 35, of East Haven, had a reciprocating saw and catalytic converters that had recently been cut off cars in his possession, police said.

Officers also found motorcycle parts and motor vehicle tire rims in the truck, police said. St Arnault was taken into custody without incident and arrested, police said.

He was charged with fifth-degree larceny and possession of burglary tools. Bond was set at $5,000. No court information was available.

St. Arnault is suspected in the theft of several other catalytic converter, police said. The Westport Police Detective Bureau is continuing its investigation in cooperation with police departments in nearby towns.
