WESTPORT, Conn. – You can make the holiday season a little more cheerful for a local child in need by donating new, unwrapped toys to the Westport Police Department during its holiday toy drive.
With help from the community, the department annually collects and distributes hundreds of new toys to underprivileged children throughout Fairfield County during the month of December, Police Sgt. Jill Ruggiero said in a statement.
In the past, toys have been distributed to organizations such as Westport's Homes With Hope, Norwalk Community Health Center, Bridgeport Council of Churches, St. Charles Urban Center in Bridgeport and St. Vincent's Medical Center.
Due to destruction caused throughout the county during Hurricane Sandy, Ruggiero said the department anticipates there will be “an even greater need” this year - not only among the underprivileged, but also from families who are recovering from the loss of their homes and/or personal property.
“We ask for your continued support and generosity to help make this year’s drive as successful as in the past,” Ruggiero said. “By doing so, you will bring joy to so many children.”
Officers will be collecting new, unopened and unwrapped toys outside the Athletic Shoe Factory, 1560 Post Road E., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 8, 9, 15 and 16. Cash donations will also be accepted, Ruggiero said.
Residents can also bring donations to the Westport Police Department through Dec. 16 at 3 p.m., Ruggiero added. The department is located at 50 Jesup Road.
The toy drive is organized by the Westport Police Department Local Union #2080 and the Police Benevolent Association.
“We thank in advance all of our continually generous donors and look forward to seeing you all at the Athletic Shoe Factory,” said Ruggiero.
