WESTPORT, Conn. Fireworks will light up the sky over Westports Compo Beach on Tuesday night during the 56th annual Westport Police Athletic League fireworks display. With about 10,000 people expected to crowd the beach, the Westport Police Department is asking for the publics cooperation before and after the show to ensure everyone's safety.
Motorists are reminded that there will be a significant amount of vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the Compo Beach area prior to and after the event and to be very cautious when driving these roads, Capt. Sam Arciola said in a traffic bulletin.
Residents driving to the event should prominently display their tickets in their vehicles, he said. Access to the beach can be made only through Compo Road South, he added.
Hillspoint Road, south of Greens Farms Road, will be open only to residents who live in that area.
Although tickets to park at the beach are sold out, a limited number of shuttle bus passes can be purchased for $30 at the police department, 50 Jesup Road, or the Parks and Recreation office, 260 Compo Road S. The shuttles will run from Longshore Club Park to Compo Beach. The pickup location at Longshore will be at the marina, Arciola said.
After the fireworks show, two-way traffic will be suspended along Compo Beach Road, Compo Road South to Bridge Street/Greens Farms Road, and Hillspoint Road through the intersection with Greens Farms Road. Two lanes of northbound traffic will run on these streets until the beach is cleared.
Finally, Arciola said pedestrians should stay on the sidewalks and not walk in the road.
The entrance to Compo Beach will close at 4 p.m. to clear vehicles from the parking lot. Entry will reopen at 5 p.m. for ticketholders. The fireworks will begin at about 9 p.m.
