Westport Man, 73, Charged With Carrying Weapon, DUI

WESTPORT, Conn. – A 73-year-old Westport man was charged with drunken driving and carrying a knife after he was pulled over Sunday night, police said.

Alan Sterling of Hale Street was stopped in the area of Main Street after police received a call about an erratic driver, police said. Sterling was seen crossing the double yellow center line before he was stopped, police said.

Once stopped, the officer said he smelled alcohol on Sterling’s breath and saw that his eyes were glassy and bloodshot. After he failed field sobriety tests, Sterling was patted down and found to be carrying a spring-loaded switch blade in his shirt pocket, police said.

At police headquarters, Sterling took a breath test and was found to be more than two times over the legal blood-alcohol limit, according to the police report. The results of his breath test were .1995 and .1856. The legal blood-alcohol limit is .08.

Sterling was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, a misdemeanor, and carrying of a dangerous weapon, a felony. He was released after posting a $500 bond for the DUI and on a promise to appear for the weapons charge. He is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 5.
