WESTPORT, Conn. — A dog that fell through the ice Wednesday morning on a pond near Hales Road In Westport was rescued by firefighters and taken to a veterinarian for evaluation, Westport fire officials said.
Firefighters were called to the pond behind 18 Hales Road at approximately 10:25 a.m. Wearing a cold-water suit, a firefighter entered the water and retrieved the dog, Assistant Fire Chief Robert Yost said. The firefighter was secured by a rope on shore, Yost added.
The dog was turned over to a Westport Animal Control officer who then took the dog to a veterinarian, Yost said.
Residents are reminded not to walk on ice unless “absolutely sure" it’s safe, Yost said.
“If you see a person or animal that has fallen through the ice, immediately call 911,” Yost said. “The successful outcome of this rescue was due to the immediate call to 911 and not attempting to rescue the animal.”
