Firefighter Jeff Gootman was promoted to lieutenant, and the 10-year veteran of the department will start this week on Platoon 3.

Lt. Brian Meadows becomes the new assistant chief on Platoon 4. He has been with the department for 13 years and was acting assistant chief on Platoon 4 since the retirement of William Dingee.

In the ceremony, Fire Chief Andrew Kingsbury noted the award both men had received in April 2006 for rescuing a trapped motorist from his car that had crashed and caught fire on the Merritt Parkway. The firefighters received the Department of Public Safety Commissioner's Recognition Award for their actions.
