The Westport Fire Department was called to Beachside Avenue at 8:45 a.m. Friday to assist police and Animal Control with the deer. The responders were able to use the Jaws of Life extrication tool to free the deer without further harm. Police briefly shut down the road on the advice of the Animal Control officer, who knew that the deer would likely run across the road once freed. The deer was safely extracted, and ran across the road as predicted.

The Westport Fire Department is advising residents to never attempt to free any animal that is trapped. Even though an animal may appear docile, they can become dangerous if they feel threatened when trapped. Residents who encounter a trapped animal should contact the Westport Animal Control Division at 203-341-5076.
