Westport Fire Inspectors Get Money For iPads

WESTPORT, Conn. – Fire inspection: There’s an “app” for that on the iPad, and soon, Westport’s fire inspectors will be using this technology in the field thanks to a grant.

The Westport Fire Marshal’s office was awarded a $2,400 fire prevention grant Monday from FM Global, a commercial property insurer, Fire Inspector Terry Dunn announced in a news release. The money will be used to purchase three iPads and the necessary inspection software, which Dunn said will “streamline the inspection process and increase productivity.”

“The information gathered in the field will directly help the fire service respond in an emergency situation,” he said in the news release.

The Fire Marshal’s office, which consists of Dunn, Fire Inspector Nate Gibbons and Fire Marshal Ed Zygmant, used iPads with the inspection software for a trial period, Gibbons said Tuesday. Now, these tools will become a permanent part of the inspection routine.

The Westport Fire Department is among several departments in the state to receive a grant from FM Global, Dunn said. The company awards grants to fire departments quarterly through its fire prevention grant program.

“At FM Global, we strongly believe the majority of property damage is preventable, not inevitable,” Michael Spaziani, manager of the fire prevention grant program, said in the release. “Far too often, inadequate budgets prevent those organizations working to prevent fire from being as proactive as they would like to be. With additional financial support, grant recipients are actively helping to improve property risk in the communities they serve.”
