Well, you can get as close as possible without donning a real badge at the town’s Citizens’ Police Academy, a popular program running again this year through the Westport Police Department.
The academy can accommodate 24 community members who want to gain a better understanding of the role of the police department and various aspects of law enforcement.
Participants will learn about different divisions and specialized units and the day-to-day operations of the department.
The academy includes demonstrations, hands-on experience with police equipment supervised by highly trained Westport officers and CPR/AED certification. Academy members will also experience a ride-along with the patrol division.
The program begins on Sept. 29 with classes from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Fridays for the first five weeks. Classes will take place on Tuesday for the remaining four weeks.
Participants must be Westport residents age 21 or older. Applications are due by Sept. 12.
For more information or an application, contact Westport Police Detective Commander Lt. Jillian Cabana at 203-341-6009.
