WESTON, Conn. -- The Weston Police Department is taking part in the "U Drive. U Text. U Pay” statewide program through April 30 in an effort to curb distracted driving.

Officers are conducting additional traffic enforcement during this time to encourage motorists to put the phone down when operating a motor vehicle.

As always, residents are encouraged to minimize distractions inside their vehicle to ensure a safe trip for both themselves and their fellow travelers.

The Weston Police Department is taking particular notice of cell phone usage while driving and other dangerous activities that some drivers engage in while behind the wheel of their vehicle.

Please do not text and drive. If drivers must talk on their cell phone while driving, they should use a hands-free device. Yet, hands free Is not risk free.

If drivers hold a cell phone while driving, they will get a ticket. A first offense is $150, a second offense is $300 and a third offense is $500.
