Two Charged In Westport Book Theft

WESTPORT, Conn. – Two New York City residents were arrested Wednesday in Westport and charged with stealing more than $860 worth of books from the Barnes & Noble store at 1076 Post Road E., police said.

Police were called to the store at approximately 3 p.m. on a report of shoplifting in progress. When officers arrived, employees identified the suspects and told police the suspects fled on foot, Lt. Arthur Belile said in a press release.

The suspects, identified as Alfred Green and Raheim Pope, both of Brooklyn, were later captured. Through the investigation, it was determined $868 worth of books was stolen from the store, Belile said.

A Jaguar with Georgia license plates was later found and identified as the car the suspects used to drive to the store, Belile said. Inside, officers could see two large quantities of books, he said.

Green, 40, was charged with criminal attempt at fifth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit fifth-degree larceny, both misdemeanors. He was being held on a $500 bond.

Pope, 37, was charged with fifth-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit fifth-degree larceny and interfering with an officer. All three charges are misdemeanors, Belile said. He was being held on a $5,000 bond.
