Police officers and firefighters responded to the scene at 8:30 a.m. on a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a utility pole and wires. When Engine 4 arrived, firefighters found a box truck resting against a stone wall and a snapped utility pole. Live wires were on the truck, energizing it, fire officials said. The occupants of the truck were able to get out without injury.
A transformer on the pole was compromised, leaking a small amount of mineral oil onto the roadway, according to fire officials. Police and fire units blocked off the road, and CL&P responded after a short period of time to deal with the hazardous electrical issue. Fire units remained on the scene while the power lines were de-energized.
Sylvan Road was closed for several hours while CL&P lifted the wires off the truck and replaced the snapped pole.
Fire officials remind residents to treat all downed or low-hanging wires as potentially life-threatening and to assume they are live at all times. Stay a safe distance away from power lines and remember that even de-energized lines can become re-energized at any time.
