The crash occurred at about 6 a.m., and traffic delays were still being reported late Saturday morning on I-4, with heavy backups to Exit 10 in Newtown after 11 a.m., according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

The crash occurred before the snow began to fall, but it was coming down as the cleanup continued into the late morning.

Two lanes were closed in the area of the crash, with a fuel leak also reported in the area, according to Connecticut State Police.

The driver of the tractor-trailer sustained minor injuries, state police said. The condition of the chickens was not known.

The Connecticut Department of Agriculture and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection were reported on the scene along with DOT and state police.

All lanes were expected to reopen by Saturday afternoon.
