WESTPORT, Conn. -- Three men were arrested after a Westport resident spotted them trying to break into his car early Friday, police said.

Officers responded to a home on Imperial Avenue at about 3 a.m. when the resident called in a complaint of a man breaking into his vehicle, police said.

The resident was able to provide officers with a description of the suspect's vehicle, police said. That vehicle was located and stopped by officers in the area, police said.

Gary Cappiello, who was driving, and Brian Martinez, the passenger, were both arrested, police said. The pair admitted to officers that they had knowingly driven a third person into the area so that he could steal from cars, police said.

Officers also found a large machete-type knife on the floor of the car behind Cappiello’s seat, police said.

The third person was identified as James Fleming, who was arrested at a Norwalk motel within hours, police said. Fleming admitted to breaking into vehicles in Westport and identified Cappiello as the driver and Martinez as the “lookout,” police said.

Cappiello was charged with third-degree conspiracy to commit burglary, sixth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny and weapons in a motor vehicle. Martinez was charged with third-degree conspiracy to commit burglary and sixth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny. Each was held on $2,500 bond and transported to Norwalk Superior Court for arraignment.

Fleming was charged with third-degree burglary of a motor vehicle and sixth-degree criminal attempt to commit larceny. Fleming was unable to post $2,500 bond and was transported to Norwalk Superior Court for arraignment.
