The investigation began after police were told that Zayas was in possession of a firearm, which he kept at 556 Capitol Ave. Apartment 3 in Bridgeport. After confirming the information, task force detectives obtained a search-and-seizure warrant for the residence, State Police said.

Task force officers saw Zayas leave the apartment and get into a vehicle Monday, State Police said. They stopped his vehicle nearby, State Police said.

As detectives approached vehicle, Zayas attempted to flee and intentionally struck a police car penning him in, State Police said.

No one was injured in the crash, State Police said.

Zayas surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident, State Police said.

Officers found 2.8 grams of crack cocaine and $541 in cash in his possession, State Police said.

Once Zayas was in custody, task force detectives and detectives from the Connecticut State Police statewide narcotics task force southwest office executed a search-and-seizure warrant at 556 Capitol Ave., police said.

Detectives seized a loaded .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun from Zayas' bedroom, State Police said. They also found evidence that Zayas had been living there, State Police said.

Zayas was transported to State Police barracks in Bridgeport and charged with criminal possession of a firearm, criminal possession of ammunition, possession of narcotics and reckless endangerment.

He was held on $110,000 bond and then remanded to the custody of Bridgeport police on arrest warrants held by the department, police said.
