Staples Runner Hit By Minivan In Westport

WESTPORT, Conn. – A 15-year-old Westport girl on the Staples High School Cross Country Track team was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries Tuesday after she was hit by a minivan while running on Long Lots Road, police said.

The accident happened shortly before 4 p.m. near Peabody Lane, said Westport Police Sgt. Richard Frazier in a news release. Frazier was the first to respond on scene. The girl was one of six team members running eastbound in the shoulder area of the westbound lane as required, Frazier said. The cross country coach was also running with the group, he said.

Westport EMS treated the girl before she was transported to Norwalk Hospital for further evaluation. She was accompanied by her coach to the hospital, Frazier said.

No one else was injured in the accident, Frazier said, and the driver of the minivan did stop after the incident. The accident remained under investigation Tuesday night, but Frazier said alcohol and speed were not contributing factors.

“Motorists are reminded that this is a busy time with an increased presence of pedestrians, bicyclists and students waiting at bus stops or walking and running on Westport roads,” Frazier said. “Please drive safely and be aware of others using the roadway.”
