STAMFORD, Conn. -- A home health care aide who was charged by Westport police with stealing paintings from a client was arrested by Stamford police Thursday on charges of stealing silverware worth $17,000 from a Stamford client, police said.
Grace Kinda, 33, of 94 Frederick St., Stamford, was charged with second-degree larceny. Kinda surrendered to Stamford police on Thursday, and bond was set at $50,000.
Kinda visited a Long Ridge Road home last Sept. 28 to meet a client who was seeking care for her husband, who is in his 80s, police said.
On that day, the 79-year-old woman thought it was odd that the woman was so interested in the silverware, police said.
"She asked a lot of questions about the silverware," said Sgt. Peter DiSpagna of the Property Crimes Bureau. "She said she was from Nigeria and had never seen it."
The next day, the 79-year-old woman left the suspect with her husband and left the house, police said. When she returned, the aide said "that she was not cut out for this type of work and wanted to go back to her old job of cleaning houses," DiSpagna said.
On Thanksgiving, the homeowner went to take out her silverware but discovered the 36-piece set was missing as well as linens valued at $400, police said.
The woman called police and told them of her suspicions about the health aide, police said. Investigator Rick Vetter "discovered the silverware was sold to a precious metal dealer in Westport," DiSpagna said. The dealer recognized the items and had photographed them before selling them, police said.
In March, Westport police charged Kinda with stealing seven original paintings, three prints and one lithograph, worth an estimated $41,000 from a Westport resident while working as a home health care aide, police said.
All of the stolen art work was recovered in New York, according to a published report.
