WESTPORT, Conn. – Michael Pickering, the assistant Staples High School freshman football coach accused of giving players a password to a pornographic website, appeared in court Wednesday and his case was continued to Aug. 22, court records show.
Pickering turned himself in to Westport police in November and faces three counts of risk of injury to a child, a felony. Court records show he has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
An investigation was launched after school officials were alerted by a student not on the football team that Pickering had provided players with a password to access a pornographic website. During the investigation, three players confirmed that Pickering had provided the password, police said.
According to police, Pickering stated he was trying to create camaraderie amongst the players.
In addition to serving as assistant football coach, Pickering worked in the maintenance department at Staples and was also a freshman lacrosse coach. Since the investigation, he has been removed from his positions.
