Police: Westport Man Fell Asleep At The Wheel Before Crash

WESTPORT, Conn. — A Westport man faces drunken driving charges after he fell asleep at the wheel and crashed his car into a guardrail on the Sherwood Island Connector early Friday, police said.

Enyinnia Ugorji-Ufomaduh, 28, of Greens Farms Road, was charged with operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol and failure to drive in the proper lane, police said.

Officers called to a motor vehicle crash around 12:30 a.m. found a Mercedes Benz stuck on the guardrail at Sherwood Island Connector and Nyala Farms Road, police said.

The driver, Ugorji-Ufomaduh, told police he fell asleep while driving, police said.

He failed field sobriety tests and a breath test done at police headquarters showed he was over the legal limit to drive, police said.

He was released on $500 cash bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 16.
