Police: Westport Man, 67, Hit Girlfriend's Dog During Fight

WESTPORT, Conn. -- A 67-year-old Westport man was charged with hitting his girlfriend's dog and violating a protective order after a domestic dispute, police said.

Westport officers were called to a home Wednesday on a report of a disturbance between two people who lived there, police said.

During the investigation, officers were told that Martin Smiley, 67, had become physical with his girlfriend and then struck her dog before throwing it outside the house, police said. There was also a protective order in place against Smiley from a prior domestic incident, police said.

Smiley was arrested and charged with violating a protective order, disorderly conduct and cruelty to animals. He was issued a $2,500 bond and appeared in court Thursday.
