A volunteer firefighter in Shelton is facing an arson charge after allegedly starting a fire in a pickup truck outside a firehouse during a dinner celebrating a former captain.

The Shelton Police Department announced the arrest of Shelton resident William Tortora, 57, over the weekend, who is facing multiple charges, including arson, following an investigation into a suspicious fire that was started last month during an event at Echo Hose Company 1 on Coram Avenue.

Detectives from the department launched an investigation on Feb. 3, which determined that a fire was intentionally started in the rear of a pickup truck which was parked abutting the firehouse, police said.

Police said that during the investigation, detectives investigated the incident by identifying individuals potentially involved, interviewing several members of the Shelton Fire Department, as well as individuals that were present at the captain’s dinner on the night the fire started, which led them to Tortora.

Tortora was arrested on March 1 and charged with second-degree arson, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. He is also facing conspiracy charges in relation to each of the other counts charged against him. Tortora is currently being held on a $250,000 bond following his arraignment in Derby Superior Court on March 2.

According to police, an additional arrest is expected in regard to the arson incident. Keep following Daily Voice for updates.
