Police: Missing Newtown Man, 74, Found Safe

"Just wanted again thank everyone for their help!," Newtown police said in a Facebook  post. "The elderly missing man was found safely on a wooded trail off of Eden Hill Road by a concerned citizen and true hero. This individual, yet to be named, without a doubt saved this man's life!!"

updated: NEWTOWN, Conn. — The Newtown Police Department reported that the missing man was found safe at about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday.

original story: NEWTOWN, Conn. — A helicopter has been called in to help search for a missing 74-year-old man from Newtown after a Silver Alert was issued on Wednesday afternoon.

His name is Martin Lee Allen, and he was seen leaving his house on Hattertown Road in Newtown by foot at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. 

He was described as white, 5-foot-8 and 115 pounds with gray hair and brown eyes, police said. 

He walks with a severe hunch, and was seen in the Eden Hill Road area in Easton around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, police said. 

Allen, who was described as having a mental disability, was wearing a black coat, black boots and a black hunter hat with ear flaps, and was carrying two white bags because he likes to collect cans. 

He was also seen in the Poverty Hollow Road area in Redding early Wednesday afternoon. 

Anyone who sees the man is asked to call the Newtown Police Department at 203-426-5841, the Easton Police Department at 203-268-4111 or the Redding Police at 203-938-3400.
