State and local police blocked off the road Thursday afternoon after receiving a report of possible human remains found on the property of 89 Norfield Road. The remains are believed to be connected to the disappearance of Jeannette and Jeffrey Navin of Easton, who were last seen Aug. 4.
Police did not confirm Friday afternoon that the remains found were those of the Navins, and would not reveal the gender of the remains. Police said that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Farmington was still working on identifying the remains.
Weston police said that the property owner called police Thursday afternoon reporting something suspicious, saying there were items in the yard that did not belong based on yard work that was being done. Officers arrived and located areas in the yard that appeared suspicious and may contain evidence possibly related to the Navin case, police said. They secured the scene and called state police and Easton police, who responded.
It has been previously reported that Kyle Navin, the 27-year-old son of Jeannette and Jeffrey who has been listed as a person of interest in the case, knew one of the occupants of the home where the remains were found. Police said Friday that the home has been unoccupied for 10 years and that the homeowner is an adult male who has a son. Police did not confirm whether or not the son knew Kyle Navin.
Kyle Navin is currently in federal custody on gun charges. At a detention hearing Friday morning, a federal prosecutor said that evidence "strongly suggests" that Navin killed his parents.
State police said that the investigation remains active and more information will be released as it becomes available.
