Original story: BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — At least one person was killed after a driver attempting to escape police hit another car and two pedestrians in Bridgeport on Thursday afternoon.

At 1:20 p.m., a car was stopped on I-95 near Exit 26, but as a trooper approached, the driver took off and fled the scene, State Police said. The car was then involved in a crash, resulting in a life-threatening injury on Bridgeport streets, state police said. The driver tried to flee on foot but was taken into custody, state police said.

City spokesman Av Harris said the car was fleeing state police when hit another car and then two pedestrians near the intersection of Railroad and Iranistan avenues. The driver got out and fled on foot, Harris said.

The suspect was later taken into custody by Bridgeport Police, Harris said. The Connecticut Post said police used a K-9 officer to track the man to the basement of a a Lewis Street home.

The driver of the car and the two pedestrians were all severely injured, and there has been at least one fatality and may be more, Harris said. He did not know which person had died.

A wrecked bright blue Toyota Yaris — the car hit by the suspect's car — was still sitting on the sidewalk hours after the crash.

State Police said that Railroad Avenue was closed to traffic at Iranistan Avenue, in the area where the accident took place, and that delays could be expected on I-95.
