TSA officers found the .38 caliber handgun in the man's laptop bag as he was passing through an airport checkpoint, the TSA said. The gun was loaded with six bullets. The man, who was not identified, told officers that he had forgotten he had the gun with him, according to the TSA.

Port Authority Police were immediately contacted. They responded, confiscated the gun and arrested the man on state weapons charges, the TSA said. There was no impact to airport operations, the TSA reported.

The TSA reminded travelers in a statement that they are responsible for the contents of the bags they bring to the airport, and they should look through their bags before coming to the airport to make sure there are no illegal or prohibited items in them.

Weapons, including firearms, firearm parts and ammunition, are not permitted in carry-on bags, but cabe transported in checked bags if they are properly packed, the TSA said. Travelers should familiarize themselves with state and local firearm laws for each point of travel prior to departure.

The TSA has guidelines on how to travel with firearms on its website, though individual airlines may have additional requirements. Travelers should contact their airlines to inquire about policies.

Passengers who bring firearms to checkpoints are subject to possible criminal charges and civil penalties from the tSA up to $11,000.
