Aylin Sophia Hernandez, 6, and her father, Oscar Hernandez, had been spotted earlier Friday in the Altoona area, Pennsylvania State Police said. ABC 7 New York said they were taken into custody on I-99 in State College, Pa. NBC Connecticut reported the girl was safe.

State College is about 350 miles from Bridgeport, where the fatal stabbing occurred and the abduction began.

Oscar Hernandez, 39, had stabbed the girl's mother and a second woman, who is critical condition, in a violent domestic attack in their home at 69 Greenwood Road at about 2:45 a.m., then fled with the girl, police said.

A multi-state Amber Alert had been issued for Aylin, with police alerting residents throughout Connecticut, New York and Pennsylvania.

"This is a terrible tragedy and our department is on top of it," Mayor Joe Ganim said Friday at the scene.

The house is in a quiet residential neighborhood off Summit Street.

A neighbor said she would occasionally see the woman as she drove in the neighborhood but didn't know her.

"This is a really safe neighborhood," she said. "This is a tragedy."

Bridgeport Police Capt. Brian Fitzgerald said there had been no domestic-related calls previously at the home.

But he said Hernandez has prior domestic-related incidents but not with the deceased woman and not in Bridgeport.

The two victims were not identified by name. But Aylin Sofia Hernandez’s mother, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The second victim, who was identified as a female friend of the mother, was in critical condition at St. Vincent Medical Center, but she is expected to survive, Fitzgerald said.

The Amber Alert flashed on cellphones throughout the area and was posted on highway signs.

Anyone with any information on the abduction is asked to call 911 immediately to provide information.
