Antonio Muralles of Stamford died early Thursday of a stab wound to the chest in the attack Wednesday evening, police said. His family in Stamford as well as relatives in his native Guatemala were notified, police said.
At about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, Stamford EMS was responding to an unrelated incident when they saw a man collapse at the corner of Broad and Bedford streets, police said.
They started to treat the man and observed a stab wound to his chest, police said. He was transported to Stamford Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. After several hours of surgery he succumbed to his injuries at 1:07 a.m., police said.
An autopsy will be performed Friday at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Police said the attackers were assaulting the man with a stick when one of the male attackers pulled out a knife and stabbed Muralles several times in the torso. The attackers fled on foot in different directions, police said.
The area is very heavily traveled and was well lit at the time of the attack, police said.
Police believe there were several witnesses to this attack. Investigators will be recovering video to assist the investigation. They ask that anyone who has information or who witnessed the crime to call the Stamford Police Detective Bureau at 203-944-4417. All calls will be kept confidential.
