Man Dies In Large Fire In His Stratford Home

STRATFORD, Conn. — A Stratford man died in a large fire in his home on Melville Street on Saturday evening, the fire department said.

The 23 firefighters at the scene had the blaze in the 2.5-story home under control within about 30 minutes, according to an Instagram post. 

"Unfortunately, one victim succumbed to their injuries," the fire department said. 

The fire broke out at about 5 p.m. at 25 Melville St. 

The man was found dead in a heavily damaged upstairs bedroom after the fire was extinguished, according to the Stratford Star. 

A cockatoo also died, but the two dogs managed to escape the fire, the Star said. The victim's wife and adult son were not home at the time, according to the Stratford Star.

The cause of the fire and the man's death remain under investigation, the Star said.
