Man Charged With DUI After Westport Police Car Is Hit

WESTPORT, Conn. – A 38-year-old Waterbury man was charged with drunken driving in Westport over the weekend after police said he crashed into the back of a police car.

The accident happened early Saturday morning at the intersection of Post Road East and Sherwood Island Connector, where the police cruiser was stopped at a red light, police said.

When approached by the officer, the driver, Richard Lanza smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech and was swaying on his feet, according to the police report.

Lanza failed field sobriety tests and refused a breath test, police said. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, a misdemeanor. He was released on a $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on Jan. 31.
