WESTPORT, Conn. — A 34-year-old New Haven man was charged in home and car burglaries in Westport, including the theft of a handgun, police said.

On Tuesday, Westport detectives served two arrest warrants for Devon Groomes in Norwalk Court, where he was held on other charges, police said.

The two arrests came after lengthy investigations by the Detective Bureau into overnight home and car burglaries in July, police said.

On July 21, a resident of Woodside Avenue reported his garage had been entered and a bicycle was stolen, police said. The bicycle had been recovered on Partrick Lane on July 19 and was turned over to the Police Department.

On July 24, a Wilton Road property owner reported that a handgun had been stolen from her vehicle while it was parked in the driveway, police said. The handgun was entered into the state database as stolen, police said.

On Sept. 27, the handgun was recovered by the Bridgeport Police Department while investigating a robbery in that city, police said. Arrests were made in that incident.

Although each of the crimes was reported days apart, the Westport Police Department Detective Bureau determined that they had occurred during overnight on July 18.

Information from interviews of other individuals arrested and cellphone information obtained through search warrants was part of the lengthy investigation, which resulted in these arrest warrants, police said.

The Westport Police Department is working with the New Canaan and Darien Police Departments in continuing its investigations into a number of motor vehicle burglaries that occurred in the early summer through October. In a number of these cases, the credit cards of the victims were used in Connecticut, police said. The police investigation is ongoing.

Groomes was charged in both crimes with third-degree burglary and fifth-degree larceny. Bond for that incident was set at $25,000.

He was also charged with third-degree burglary from a motor vehicle, stealing a firearm, and criminal possession of a pistol or revolver. Bond in this incident was set at $175,000.

Groomes was unable to post bond and was arraigned in Norwalk Court on the charges.
