Man Charged In Fatal New Year's Day Crash On I-95 In Westport

WESTPORT, Conn. – A 32-year-old Bridgeport man is facing manslaughter charges in the fatal Jan. 1 rollover accident off Interstate 95 in Westport that killed two people, state police said Monday.

An investigation into the early-morning accident shows that the driver, Jamain Jerry Allen, was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana, according to an arrest report. It was also determined that he was speeding before the crash, police said.

Allen was traveling northbound when he lost control of the 2005 Nissan Altima near exit 19 in Fairfield. The car drove off the right shoulder and rolled down an embankment near Maple Avenue, police said.

Passengers Terrance Bernard, 46, and Savannah Wakely, 25, both from Rhode Island, were killed. A third passenger, Bridgeport resident Jennifer Shaver, was hospitalized. Allen was treated and later released.

He was arrested Sunday night on a warrant and found in possession of a small amount of marijuana, police said. In addition to two counts of second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle, Allen was charged with second-degree assault with a motor vehicle, operating under the influence of alcohol, failure to drive in the proper lane, speeding and driving under suspension.

He was also charged for the marijuana possession, police said. He was held on a $500,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court Monday morning.
