House Fire Doused In Westport’s Saugatuck Shores

(Story updated at 10 p.m.)

WESTPORT, Conn. – The residents of the home at 139 Harbor Road in Westport’s Saugatuck Shores neighborhood were not injured Thursday after a fire erupted in the ceiling of a second-floor bedroom, Assistant Fire Chief William Dingee said.

The fire was reported at 3:16 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters saw heavy smoke coming from the roof in the rear of the home, but there were no visible flames, Dingee said. Firefighters had to open the walls and use thermal imaging cameras to find the fire, which started in the ceiling of a second-floor bedroom and traveled up into the third-floor attic, Dingee said.

The fire was extinguished in approximately 30 minutes, Dingee said. Damage was contained to the second-floor bedroom, the attic area above the bedroom and a portion of the roof, but most of the house suffered smoke and water damage, he said.

A total of 35 firefighters, including some from Norwalk and Fairfield, responded to the call. The Wilton Fire Department provided coverage at Westport fire headquarters. The last fire units cleared the area by 7 p.m. The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
