The child suffered abrasions and was kept for testing and observation, but she did not have a head injury or any broken bones, police said.
At about 4:20 p.m., the girl’s mother drove into the lot to take her older daughter to a basketball game at the Unquowa Road school, police said. The girl, who played on a team, was late and jumped out of the car to run into the building while her mom parked, police said.
Before the mother could get to the rear door, the younger child managed to get out of her safety seat and ran after her sister, police said.
The driver was heading eastbound in his 2006 Toyota Camry in the lot when the child darted in front of him, making contact with his front left bumper, police said.
The "distraught" driver, who had been visiting a friend in the area, stayed on the scene as the girl’s mother called for an ambulance, police said. He has not been charged in the accident.
The collision is under investigation by the Fairfield Police Crash Reconstruction Unit.
