Officials blocked the Post Road East from Turkey Hill Road to Maple Avenue for about 15 minutes because of the "active blaze" at about 6:15 p.m. Thursday, fire officials said.
The fire was located in the main nursery building and was traveling across the ceiling when firefighters arrived, Westport Assistant Fire Chief Larry Conklin said.
A quick knockdown of the fire was made by Engine 5, the first engine to arrive, Conklin said. Firefighters hooked a hose up to fire hydrant across the street but didn't need to use it because the blaze was extinguished so quickly.
A total of three engines and a ladder truck, all from Westport, responded to the blaze, he said. The scene was cleared by 7 p.m.
The fire is currently under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s office.
Fairfield and Norwalk Fire Department’s provided manpower and apparatus to cover the Westport fire station as well as a Rapid Intervention Team at the scene.
