According to police reports, two black males entered the bank on Post Road at about 1:15 p.m. and handed two tellers the checks, worth $1,994 and $1,998.

The manager of the bank, who had been notified of a similar attempt that was turned down earlier in the day at the Hudson City Savings Bank branch in Westport, took the checks into a back room to verify their legitimacy, police said. But the manager did not ask the tellers to hold off on the transaction, police said. The tellers then cashed the checks, and the two suspects left without incident, police said.

Both checks were headed with the name of a Brookfield doctor, and they were written out to two different people, police said.

Although not identified in reports, police have been able to determine the identity of the two suspects. Background checks show both men have criminal records of larceny, fraud and forgery, according to police.

Police determined the checks were fabricated after calling the Brookfield doctor and determining he was still in possession of the checks in question, police said. The check had not been stolen or used, police said.
