Multiple state police and Department of Transportation vehicles were parked along I-91 northbound at Exit 27 to investigate a fatal crash, which occurred at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday near the on-ramp, state police said.
Just before 5 a.m., an Acura drove around officials vehicles that were blocking the lane and smashed into an empty state police SUV, NBC Connecticut said. No state police troopers or DOT workers were injured.
The driver, Martin Jackson, 29, of Hartford, was charged with DUI, operating with a suspended license and failure to drive in proper lane, NBC Connecticut said.
As of Saturday, two highway fatalities had been reported in Connecticut.
Michael Rogers, 50, of Wethersfield, was killed after crashing into trees while driving north on I-91 in the Cromwell accident, NBC said.
On Wednesday, Hope Butler, 26, of Rhode Island, was killed when she was driving on Route 6 in Killingly and struck a tree, WTNH said.
A fatal crash in Stamford that occurred on a city road is not included in the highway count. In that crash on Wednesday afternoon, Donte Smith, a 19-year-old from Stamford, was killed when the car in which he was riding slammed into a tree on Washington Boulevard near Scalzi Park.
The 20-year-old driver of the BMW, another Stamford man, was critically injured, police said.
