Westport Fire Department Helps Put Out Blaze In VW Golf On I-95

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The driver of a VW Golf was able to safely get out of the vehicle after it caught fire Sunday afternoon at the Interstate 95 northbound ramp of Exit 19 in Southport. 

A car fire closed the I-95 northbound ramp of exit 19 for more than an hour Sunday afternoon as the Fairfield Fire Department investigated.

“The driver of the car was very lucky to have been able to safely stop the car and get out without getting burned or injured,” Fairfield Assistant Fire Chief Scott Bisson said.

Fairfield and Westport firefighters closed the ramp for about an hour as they extinguished the blaze and investigated its cause. 

The total damage to the 2013 VW Golf was estimated at $20,000. The car was originally valued at $30,000.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
