The accident at the intersection with Burroughs Road was the second major accident handled by Fairfield firefighters in less than three hours. In the 3 a.m. rollover on I-95, one person was killed and two people were injured. (Read about that crash here on the Daily Voice.)

In the second accident, the elderly driver of the car was trapped and unconscious inside his heavily damaged vehicle after colliding with a tractor-trailer, Assistant Fire Chief George Gomola said in a statement.

Fairfield firefighters used the Jaws of Life to gain access to the driver and remove him from the vehicle. Life support efforts were initiated by AMR Paramedics assisted by Fairfield Firefighters on the scene and en route to St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, Gomola said.

“The driver of the passenger vehicle was in extremely critical condition at the time emergency crews arrived on scene," he said. "Police, Fire, and EMS worked together to provide lifesaving emergency medical treatment and rapid extrication. Excellent work delivered with the highest level of professionalism was done by all.”

The cause of the accident was under investigation by the Fairfield Police Department. Black Rock Turnpike in the area of Burroughs Road was closed for the investigation.

Firefighters from Engine 2 and 3 as well as Ladders 1 and 2 responded to the crash.
