WESTPORT, Conn. -- Westport police arrested a suspect Tuesday in the 2011 armed robbery of the Merit Country Store thanks to a DNA match from the perpetrator's shirt and mask, police said.

The shirt and mask worn by the perpetrator were discarded on the roadway after the hold-up at 3:32 a.m. Sept. 29, 2011, police Capt. Vincent Penna said.

The State of Connecticut forensic laboratory advised the Westport Police Department that DNA on the items matched a known offender in the database, Penna said in a statement.

A search warrant was obtained for samples of the suspect's DNA and further testing confirmed the initial test results.

Derek Forsythe, 26, whose last known address was in Weston, was arrested Tuesday after detectives served the arrest warrant in Norwalk Superior Court.

He was charged with first-degree robbery and sixth-degree larceny.Forsythe was held on $35,000 bond. He is currently incarcerated on multiple unrelated charges, police said.
