Campaign Sign Thefts Reported In Westport

WESTPORT, Conn. – Political campaign signs around Westport are believed to have been targeted by thieves, Westport Police Capt. Sam Arciola said Tuesday.

The department has recently received several complaints about stolen campaign signs, Arciola said. Though he could not specify which candidates' signs had been targeted, he said complaints have been received from both parties.

While it might seem like a victimless crime, taking these signs is a criminal offense, Police Chief Dale Call said.

“The taking of campaign signs from either private or public property that their presence is allowed on will not be tolerated and subject to a criminal arrest,” Call said in a statement.

The majority of the complaints were in regards to signs that were taken from private property, Call said. But the department also gets complaints about signs that were taken from town land, where they are allowed, he said.

"This happens every election season," Call said.

Rather than steal signs, Call said the best way for people to show their political preference is at the polls on Election Day.
