Basement Fire Erupts In Westport Home

WESTPORT, Conn. – A fire that started in the basement of a home at 16 Catamount Road in Westport  was quickly doused by firefighters Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were called to the home at approximately 6:30 a.m. Upon arrival, smoke was seen coming from inside the house, Assistant Fire Chief Michael Kronick said in a statement. The home’s occupants were already outside and unharmed, he added.

The fire was pinpointed to a basement utility room and extinguished before it could spread, Kronick said. Fire damage was confined to the utility room, but there was smoke damage throughout the home, he said.

Firefighters used fans to remove smoke from the house and the scene was cleared at approximately 9:13 a.m., Kronick said. There were no injuries.

The cause of the fire was under investigation by the Westport Fire Marshal’s office, but it appears to have been accidental, Kronick said.

Because of last weekend’s blizzard, the fire department is asking residents to help clear neighborhood fire hydrants buried under snow.

“With over 1,200 fire hydrants in the town of Westport, it is difficult for firefighters to get to every one of them and shovel them clear of snow,” Kronick said.

Residents are also reminded to test the smoke detectors in their homes to make sure they are working properly.
