The Eastwood Road resident was doing yard work at about 5:40 p.m. when the raccoon attacked, police told the Hour. The resident tried to run but tripped and was under attack until a passing driver stopped their car and hit the raccoon with a car mat, driving it off, the Hour reported.

A Norwalk Animal Control official told the Hour that raccoons may attack if they feel cornered, are injured, or are chased out of their den, but an attack does not necessarily mean the animal is rabid. Raccoons normally come out at night or at dusk but are known to come out during the day to search for food, the Hour reported.

Pet owners should make sure that their pets are up to date on vaccinations.
